COP28 Agreement Recognizes Value of Natural Gas Supporting Renewables in Achieving a Global Clean Energy Future
(Washington) – The Natural Allies Leadership Council, including former Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), former Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH), former Congressman Kendrick Meek (D-FL) and former Mayor Michael Nutter (D-Philadelphia), issued the following statement regarding the final agreement released by U.N. climate summit organizers this week:
“We are pleased that COP28 climate talks ended with pointing out that lower carbon fuels like natural gas will play a role in the shift to cleaner energy sources. The summit’s final agreement recognizes that such fuels can play a role in facilitating the energy transition to a lower-carbon energy system while ensuring energy security.
Natural Allies supports a cleaner energy future, reducing emissions, and addressing the impacts of climate change. We must be focused on strategies that drive down emissions quickly while accounting for the diverse, heavily coal-dependent, and rapidly growing energy needs of our world. Natural gas replacing coal, and partnering with the ramp-up of renewables, is a proven carbon reduction strategy that has successfully worked in the U.S. and can still help drive down global emissions quickly too. It’s encouraging that the delegates included this pathway in the final agreement.”
