Who We Are

Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future is a national coalition dedicated to practical, inclusive energy solutions that drive climate progress while protecting affordability and reliability. We believe in a balanced, all-of-the-above approach that unites natural gas and renewables to build a sustainable, equitable, and secure energy future for every community in the Garden State.

We are working to build awareness about the vital role natural gas plays in New Jersey’s energy future. With 73% of New Jersey households already relying on natural gas for home energy use, and more than half of the state’s electricity generated by natural gas, this resource is central to ensuring reliable, affordable power while driving down emissions.

Natural gas powers economic growth, protects families and businesses from rising energy costs, and supports the expansion of renewable energy.

Together with renewables, natural gas ensures New Jersey’s energy grid can meet demand at any time — whether or not the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.

ENERGY LANDSCAPE

Why New Jersey Needs a Balanced Energy Approach

New Jersey is facing a critical energy crossroads:

  • Rising Costs: Power prices have increased 31% in the last five years, and New Jersey now has the 9th highest energy costs in the nation.
  • Shift to Net Importer of Energy: Once a net exporter of energy in 2018, New Jersey now imports more power than it produces due to the closure of natural gas, coal, and nuclear facilities. Nearly 3,000 megawatts of generation have gone offline since 2018, while many new projects were canceled or blocked.
  • Renewable Challenges: Offshore wind was touted as a solution, but every project along New Jersey’s coast has stalled, with major investors walking away.
  • Equity Concerns: Over 40% of Black households in New Jersey report cutting back on food and medicine to pay energy bills — double the rate of white households. Energy insecurity is worsening health, education, and economic outcomes for vulnerable families.

New Jersey needs a proven, affordable, and clean energy foundation to support growth.

Natural gas provides that foundation while enabling renewable expansion.

NJ Needs Natural Gas

Why Natural Gas Is Essential for New Jersey

  • Natural gas emits 50% less CO₂ than coal and has driven 61% of U.S. carbon reductions in the last two decades.
  • Homes using natural gas save an average of $1,132 per year compared to all-electric homes.
  • A GE study found that natural gas working alongside renewables cuts emissions 62–78% more effectively than renewables alone.
  • Natural gas keeps costs down, ensures reliability, and helps integrate renewable power seamlessly by ramping up or down instantly when needed.

What New Jerseyans Are Saying

“Energy costs are on the rise. We need a Governor who can act immediately to bring them down…we need gas…We’ll generate more energy, create jobs, and cut costs.”

Former Democratic Majority Leader of the New Jersey Senate, Steve Sweeney

NJ Senate President Nick Scutari (D-Clark) said “natural gas shouldn’t be dismissed either — saying it was considered a ‘clean energy’ source not too long ago. Simple math says natural gas — and its millions of miles of pipeline — has to be part of the energy plan moving forward, he said.”

Polling shows a majority of New Jersey residents want a balanced energy approach that lowers costs.

  • High Costs Are Unacceptable: Over 70% of residents across political, racial, and economic groups believe their electric bills are too high.
  • Balanced Approach Preferred: 63% of New Jerseyans want an energy strategy that combines natural gas and renewables to lower costs, versus just 26% who want all-renewables regardless of cost.
  • Broad Support for Natural Gas: Natural gas enjoys a +49% net favorability rating in New Jersey, making it the second most popular energy source behind solar.
  • Equity Focus: 67% of residents believe elected officials should focus on reducing cost burdens on low-income communities over pursuing zero-carbon goals at any cost.
