Who We Are

Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future is a national coalition dedicated to advancing practical energy solutions that reduce emissions while keeping energy affordable and reliable.

We believe Pennsylvania’s energy future depends on balance — with natural gas and renewables working together to keep families warm, businesses running, and communities thriving.

Natural gas is the backbone of Pennsylvania’s energy economy. Today, nearly 60% of the state’s electricity is generated from natural gas, and over half of Pennsylvania households rely on it as their primary source of home heating. The latest data also shows Pennsylvania’s natural gas sector supported approximately 123,000 PA jobs and contributed more than $41 billion in annual state economic activity.

From 2013 to 2023, natural gas consumption in Pennsylvania rose by 64%, driving significant climate progress. During that decade, CO₂ emissions from the state’s electric power sector fell 37% — from about 106 million metric tons to 66.5 million — largely due to the transition from coal to cleaner-burning natural gas.

Since 2019, Pennsylvania has achieved something only three states in the nation have done: cut total CO₂ emissions by 9% while increasing power generation by 12.5%. This remarkable progress is fueled by natural gas.

Natural gas also brings savings to Pennsylvania residents and businesses. In 2023, the average Pennsylvania household, natural gas saves between $1,100 and $2,200 a year on energy costs. Prices for consumers are down as much as 76% since 2008, helping families and small businesses weather economic challenges.

As the top state in the nation for electricity exports, Pennsylvania isn’t just powering itself — it’s powering America.

We advocate for unleashing the full potential of natural gas to continue driving environmental and economic progress — ensuring no household is left behind and no community has to choose between reliability and sustainability.

Together, we can build a cleaner, stronger, and more affordable energy future for Pennsylvania and the nation.

Eugene DePasquale
Former Pennsylvania Auditor General

Eugene DePasquale

Eugene DePasquale served two terms as Pennsylvania’s Auditor General from 2013 to 2021, where he built a reputation as a fierce advocate for taxpayers and working families. He also represented the 95th District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for three terms, authoring landmark energy legislation, including Pennsylvania’s Alternative Energy Investment Act, which catalyzed more than $600 million in energy investment, job creation, and consumer savings while strengthening environmental protections. DePasquale also served as a Deputy Secretary at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, where he oversaw economic and energy development initiatives.

ENERGY LANDSCAPE

Pennsylvania’s Energy Landscape

  • MORE AFFORDABLE COSTS: Pennsylvania residential electricity prices are 87% lower than in neighboring New Jersey and 25.4% lower than in New York.
  • INFRASTRUCTURE ISN’T KEEPING PACE WITH GROWING DEMAND: As Pennsylvania emerges as a hub for data center investment and older generation assets retire, permitting delays and regulatory hurdles are creating supply bottlenecks that threaten to slow energy development.
  • DATA CENTER SURGE: Pennsylvania is rapidly emerging as a hub of the AI revolution, with companies announcing more than $90 billion in investments spanning data centers, energy and power infrastructure, and workforce and AI training initiatives across the Keystone State.

Pennsylvania needs permitting reform to unleash the potential of natural gas — a foundational energy source that can power the Keystone State and the region and fuel innovation for years to come.

PA Needs Natural Gas

Why Natural Gas Is Essential for Pennsylvania

  • Natural gas heats nearly 51% OF PENNSYLVANIA HOUSEHOLDS, providing safe, reliable energy across the state.
  • Natural gas emits 50% LESS CO₂ THAN COAL, driving 61% OF NATIONAL CARBON REDUCTIONS SINCE 2005 and 37% OF PENNSYLVANIA’S POWER-SECTOR REDUCTIONS BETWEEN 2013 AND 2023. Over that decade, coal’s share of the state’s electricity generation dropped from 39% TO 5%, while natural gas rose from 22% TO 59%.
  • Pennsylvania households that use natural gas save an average of $1,100–$2,200 ANNUALLY, with customer prices DOWN AS MUCH AS 76% SINCE 2008.
  • In 2024 alone, Pennsylvania’s natural gas abundance SAVED CONSUMERS NEARLY $10 BILLION compared to 2008 prices.
  • The state’s 49 UNDERGROUND GAS STORAGE SITES—the most of any state—help ensure dependable heating supply through harsh winters.
  • Natural gas COMPLEMENTS SOLAR AND WIND, providing instant, flexible power to stabilize the grid when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
  • As data centers expand, their energy demand is projected to SURPASS THAT OF NEW YORK CITY BY 2030, with NATURAL GAS EXPECTED TO SUPPLY ROUGHLY 60% of that power.

What Pennsylvania Voters Are Saying

“We’ve got an abundance of natural gas. They need natural gas in New England. They need to get their prices down. How we build out the infrastructure to get it there, and how much of that we can negotiate state by state, versus needing a federal partner to do that work – I think that’s going to be a real central question that we’re going to have to all grapple with not over the next 10 years but over the next several months, and that’s a conversation we’re really eager to have in Pennsylvania and I know a lot of New England states are as well.”

Polling shows Pennsylvanians want commonsense solutions that lower energy costs and enhance energy security:

  • EXPANDING NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION LOWERS COSTS: 86% of voters agree that producing more natural gas here in the U.S. would help reduce energy and utility costs for American consumers.
  • PERMITTING REFORM IS ESSENTIAL: 82% of voters support streamlining the nation’s permitting process to accelerate approval for energy infrastructure projects and ensure reliable access to affordable energy.
  • ENERGY SECURITY THROUGH U.S. PRODUCTION: 90% of voters believe that increasing domestic production of natural gas strengthens America’s national security and reduces dependence on foreign adversaries.
