Meeting Virginia’s Growing Energy Demands with Balance, Affordability, and Lower Emissions

56%

56% of Virginians rely on natural gas to meet their daily energy needs.

340

340 data center facilities operate in Virginia — making it the world’s largest data center market.

$324

$324 is the projected increase to average household bills within 5 years from Dominion Energy, driven largely by soaring AI and data center power demand.

Who We Are

Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future is a national coalition working to promote practical energy solutions that combine natural gas with renewables to advance our climate goals and deliver cost savings to residents and businesses.

Virginia is at the center of a massive energy challenge. As the nation’s largest importer of electricity and the home of the world’s biggest data center market, the Commonwealth must prepare for skyrocketing energy demand — all while keeping power reliable, affordable, and clean.

Natural Allies is focused on building public awareness about the essential role natural gas plays in ensuring reliable, affordable, and lower-carbon energy across the state. With more than half of households already depending on natural gas, and with demand projected to surge from AI-driven technologies and data centers, Virginia’s future must be built on an energy mix that unites natural gas and renewables.

We advocate for a balanced, all-of-the-above approach that puts people first — delivering climate progress without compromising energy security or affordability.

ENERGY LANDSCAPE

Virginia’s Energy Reality

More than half of Virginia households — 56% — already depend on natural gas for their daily energy needs. With energy demand set to surge amid the AI revolution in the Commonwealth, expanding natural gas infrastructure is essential to keep power reliable, costs affordable, and emissions reductions while fueling innovation across Virginia

High Dependence on Imports: Virginia is the #1 electricity-importing state in the nation.

Rising Costs Ahead: Dominion Energy, the state’s largest utility, has requested its first base rate increase since 1992 — expected to add $324 per year to average household bills within 5 years, driven largely by soaring AI and data center power demand.

Data Center Growth: With 340 facilities, Virginia hosts the world’s largest data center market. Electric demand from these facilities is expected to triple by 2050.

Equity Concerns: Over 40% of Black households are forced to cut back on food and medicine to pay energy bills, twice the rate of white households.

VA Needs Natural Gas

Why Natural Gas Is Critical For Virginia

  • Saves households over $1,100 per year compared to all-electric homes.
  • Emits 50% less CO₂ than coal and has driven 61% of U.S. carbon reductions since 2005.
  • Keeps the grid reliable when renewables can’t meet demand — dispatchable instantly to fill gaps.
  • Provides the backbone for AI and data center power needs, with natural gas projected to cover 60% of demand by 2030.
  • Acts as a lifeline during peak demand — ensuring affordable, reliable energy when it matters most.
  • Proven to work in partnership with renewables, reducing emissions 62–78% more effectively than renewables alone.

What’s At Stake for Virginia Families?

“At this juncture, natural gas is going to be part of the energy mix into the future.”

Democratic Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (VA-7)

Without natural gas, higher-emitting fuels like coal and oil would be needed to keep lights on. Additionally, rising energy costs will disproportionately impact vulnerable households — worsening health, education, and economic outcomes.

A balanced approach ensures cleaner energy while protecting affordability for all Virginians.
