Who We Are

Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future is a national coalition dedicated to advancing practical energy solutions that reduce emissions while maintaining affordability and reliability.

We believe Wisconsin’s energy future depends on balance — with natural gas and renewables working together to keep families warm, businesses running, and communities thriving.

We’re committed to raising awareness of the critical role natural gas plays in powering daily life across Wisconsin. Today, nearly 66% of residents in the Badger State rely on natural gas to heat their homes. From keeping households safe and warm through harsh winters to supporting renewable energy expansion, natural gas provides dependable, affordable energy that helps lower carbon emissions and strengthen Wisconsin’s energy foundation.

We advocate for an inclusive, all-of-the-above energy strategy — one that delivers real climate progress without leaving vulnerable households behind or compromising reliability.

Together, we can ensure Wisconsin continues to lead with energy that’s clean, affordable, and secure.

ENERGY LANDSCAPE

Wisconsin’s Energy Challenges

Wisconsin still relies heavily on coal to power homes and businesses:

  • NOTABLE RELIANCE ON COAL REMAINS: While 40% of Wisconsin electricity comes from natural gas, 32% is generated by burning carbon intensive coal.
  • HIGH COSTS: Wisconsin has the 16th highest electricity costs in the nation
  • EQUITY CONCERNS: Over 40% of Black households report cutting back on essentials like food and medicine just to cover energy bills — twice the rate of white households.

Wisconsin needs natural gas and more of it to shift away from carbon intensive coal — a foundational energy source that can power Wisconsin and fuel innovation for years to come.

WI Needs Natural Gas

Why Natural Gas Is Essential for Wisconsin

  • Natural gas provides NEARLY 66% OF WISCONSIN HOUSEHOLDS with safe, reliable energy. More than two million Wisconsin customers — including 86 million households and 177,000 businesses — rely on natural gas every day.
  • Natural gas emits 50% less CO₂ than coal, driving 61% OF NATIONAL CARBON REDUCTIONS since 2005. Since 2007, CARBON EMISSIONS IN WISCONSIN HAVE FALLEN NEARLY 12%, due in large part to the shift from coal to natural gas.
  • The average Wisconsin household pays around $420 PER YEAR FOR NATURAL GAS, compared with $1,724 FOR ELECTRICITY — A SAVINGS OF 76%.
  • Natural gas powers Wisconsin’s economy – with the recently completed Wisconsin Reliability Project, alone, generating ~$1.1 BILLION IN ECONOMIC OUTPUT, supporting 4,300 jobs and adding $68 MILLION IN STATE AND LOCAL TAX REVENUE.
  • Natural gas plays a LIFE-SAVING ROLE IN EXTREME WEATHER.
  • NATURAL GAS COMPLEMENTS RENEWABLES – ramping up instantly to keep the grid stable when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
  • Natural gas is critical for powering the AI-driven economy – and Wisconsin is preparing for a boom in data-center construction. WE ENERGIES FORECASTS 1,800 MW OF INCREASED DEMAND IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.
