Who We Are

Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future is a national coalition working to advance practical energy solutions that lower emissions while protecting affordability and reliability.

We believe New York’s future depends on a balanced energy mix — natural gas and renewables working side by side — to keep families warm, businesses running, and communities thriving.

We are committed to raising awareness about the critical role natural gas plays in powering the daily lives of New Yorkers. From heating the homes of nearly 60% of residents across the Empire State in the winter to supporting renewable expansion across the state, natural gas ensures New Yorkers have access to dependable, affordable energy while helping reduce carbon emissions.

We advocate for an inclusive, all-of-the-above approach that delivers climate progress without leaving behind vulnerable households or sacrificing reliability.

ENERGY LANDSCAPE

New York’s Energy Challenges

New York faces one of the most complex energy landscapes in the nation:

  • High Costs: New York has the 8th highest energy costs in the nation, with residents paying 53% above the national average — and the gap continues to grow.
  • Rising Rates: In just five years, summer power prices have climbed 37%, straining families and small businesses alike.
  • Equity Concerns: Over 40% of Black households report cutting back on essentials like food and medicine just to cover energy bills — twice the rate of white households.
  • Policy Barriers: Efforts in Albany could shift the cost of new natural gas hookups — up to $10,000 per home — onto customers, making cleaner, more reliable gas out of reach for many. This would also lock in the release of higher emissions from oil furnaces that are unable to convert.

Meanwhile, stalled renewable projects and supply chain challenges mean an “all-renewables” approach is neither affordable nor realistic on its own.

New York needs natural gas — a foundational energy source that can power the Empire State and fuel innovation for years to come.

  • Natural gas provides 59% of households with safe, reliable energy.
  • Natural gas emits 50% less CO₂ than coal, driving 61% of national carbon reductions since 2005.
  • Natural gas saves homeowners nearly $1,132 per year compared to electric-only systems.
  • It costs an EXTRA $590 TO OPERATE AN ELECTRIC HEAT PUMP rather than a natural gas furnace.
  • Natural gas plays a life-saving role in extreme weather — during the Blizzard of 2022, natural gas kept many homes heated when lives were at risk.
  • Natural gas complements renewables: natural gas plants can ramp up instantly to keep the grid stable when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.

Polling shows New Yorkers want energy solutions that balance affordability with climate progress:
  • Bills Are Too High: Over 77% of Democrats, 78% of seniors, 73% of Black residents, and 95% of Hispanic New Yorkers agree their electricity costs are unaffordable.
  • Stop Blocking Natural Gas: Almost six in ten New York voters (59%) oppose New York’s current posture that blocks new natural gas pipelines from Pennsylvania to support regional reliability and lower costs.
  • Balanced Approach Favored: 66% of New York voters, including 74% of state Democrats, want a mix of renewables and natural gas — not an all-renewables-at-any-cost strategy.
  • Broad Support for Natural Gas: 63% of residents view natural gas favorably (+49% net favorability), making it one of the most trusted energy sources alongside solar.
  • Equity Priorities: 63% of New Yorkers, including 72% of Black New Yorkers, believe elected officials should focus on reducing burdens for low-income communities rather than pursuing zero-carbon targets regardless of cost.
